Predictors of electroencephalograph spectral power in children

  • In this study of children with and without sleep disordered breathing (SDB), cerebral oxygenation and SDB severity were not significant determinants of electroencephalograph (EEG) spectral power, which was predominately predicted by age, heart rate, and heart rate variability.

Why this matters

  • This is the first study to analyze the association between autonomic control, cerebral oxygenation, and EEG spectral power in children with and without SDB. The results from this study highlight the importance of early detection of SDB in children before the adverse cardiovascular outcomes associated with SDB impact brain activity.
