Progress in understanding tau protein reported

Insights into the protein structure of tau may aid in the diagnosis and classification of tauopathies, new research suggests.

In a plenary session at AAIC 2021, Professor Michel Goedert of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, reviewed what has been learned about the structure of tau in studies using cryo-electron microscopy.

“All together, the findings suggest a hierarchical classification of tauopathies, based on their filament folds,” said Prof. Goedert. “This complements clinical diagnosis and neuropathology and allows for identification of new disease entities.”
