Preterm birth was associated with increased serum levels of the brain injury biomarker neurofilament light (NfL) and sustained high levels in the early postnatal period was strongly associated with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes at 2 years of age.
Why this matters ?
Serum levels of NfL and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) play important roles in brain injury in adults. However, longitudinal studies of these brain injury markers have not been investigated in preterm infants.
Preterm infants are at high risk of brain injury and neurodevelopmental impairment, which is likely due to intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH).
