All-cause dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are age-independent risk factors for COVID-19-related disease severity and death in community-dwelling individuals.
Why this matters
Various demographics/characteristics have been identified as risk factors for poor COVID-19 outcomes. The elderly are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19, especially those with dementia and other prevalent neurodegenerative diseases, but the causes of this association is unclear.
Community dwellers with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease are at risk of COVD-19, and related hospitalisation and death, which calls for implementing preventative measures, higher surveillance, and early intervention.
