Relationship between sleep and biomarkers of neurodegeneration in mild traumatic brain injury

  • In poor sleepers who have experienced mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), plasma tau is elevated versus controls, and neurofilament light (NfL) is significantly elevated versus good sleepers with mTBI; thus, poor sleep comorbid with mTBI may lead to neurodegeneration.

Why this matters

Understanding the relationship between sleep, TBI, and neurodegeneration may allow for introduction of preventative measures to reduce the risk of neurodegeneration.
