Reliability of experts in detecting epilepsy markers in electroencephalograms

  • Experts were reliably able to detect whether an electroencephalogram (EEG) contained any interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs), but reliability in identifying individual IEDs was substantially lower.

Why this matters

  • IEDs are important markers for detecting recurrence of epileptic seizures, classifying seizure type, localizing ictal onset and managing anticonvulsants.

  • Assessing the degree of agreement among raters – interrater reliability (IRR) – for identifying IEDs in EEGs is important for developing automated IED detection systems for a more efficient clinical diagnosis.
