Takeaway
Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) effectively isolated the language network in patients with brain lesions.
Why this matters
Cortical mapping (CM) via intraoperative direct electric stimulation during awake craniotomy is the gold standard for determining eloquent brain areas, supplemented and guided by task functional MRI (fMRI). However, task fMRI excludes some patients who have perioperative cognitive or physical impairments or are young.
Additional functional mapping techniques are needed to overcome the limitations of fMRI.
