Role for BIN1 in preventing synaptotoxicity in Alzheimer’s disease

  • BIN1 interaction with dephosphorylated tau may prevent synaptic tau-accumulation and delay Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis.

Why this matters

  • Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified BIN1 polymorphisms as the second-greatest genetic risk factor for development of sporadic AD.

  • Interactions between BIN1 and tau have been demonstrated in in vitro and in vivo models, however the contribution of BIN1 to AD pathogenesis remains poorly understood.
