Seizure incidence after decompressive hemicraniectomy for large middle cerebral artery infarcts

Takeaway

  • Post stroke seizure (PSS) after decompressive hemicraniectomy (DH) for large middle cerebral artery infarcts (MCA) is common and cannot be predicted from baseline characteristics.

Why this matters

  • PSSs are a common complication after stroke. Only three small retrospective studies investigating the incidence of PSS in patients who received DH for large MCA infarcts have been performed to date.

  • The high incidence of PSS in this study suggests that patients undergoing DH could benefit from the systematic prescription of prophylactic antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), particularly as patients at the highest risk could not be identified in this cohort.
