Serum neurofilament light chain levels reflect multiple sclerosis disease activity during pregnancy

  • In the third trimester of pregnancy in women with multiple sclerosis (MS), neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels are higher in those who had undergone a relapse of their disease in a previous trimester.

Why this matters ?

  • NfL is a highly specific cytoskeletal protein of neurons and its levels in serum are increasingly recognized as measures of acute of chronic neuroaxonal damage.
