Concentrations of neurofilament light chain (NF-L) in the serum reflected neuronal changes and predicted the extent of white matter (WM) decrease in former professional contact sports athletes with multiple concussions (ExPro), suggesting that serum NF-L may be a biomarker of neurodegeneration and WM abnormality progression in ExPro.
Why this matters
A reliable biomarker to diagnose and monitor neurodegeneration is lacking. Previous studies have reported increased serum NF-L levels in individuals with neurodegenerative diseases. Understanding the correlation between NF-L levels and neuronal changes may help to identify serum NF-L as a potential biomarker for neurodegeneration.
