Subthalamic nucleus activity and freezing of gait in Parkinson’s disease

  • In those with Parkinson’s disease (PD) undergoing subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS), increased subthalamic nucleus multi-unit activity (MUA) was associated with freezing of gait (FOG) but not with intentional stopping in a virtual reality gait assessment.

Why this matters

This study suggests that the subthalamic nucleus plays a role in driving motor arrest, and offers a step towards identification of clinical biomarkers for therapeutic intervention, such as closed loop adaptive DBS.
