The relationship between AQP4 antibodies and visual acuity in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders

  • There was a positive association between aquaporin-4 (AQP4)-positive status and poor visual evoked potential (VEP) outcomes, indicating that VEP is a useful assessment tool in individuals with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD).

Why this matters?

Individuals with NMOSD are often affected by optic neuritis, which results in a loss of visual function. Previous research has shown that individuals with AQP4 seropositive NMOSD have poor visual acuity; however, measures for visual acuity are subjective and a more objective measure may help to provide more effective disease management in individuals with NMOSD.
