The relationship between primitive reflexes and dementia in adults with Down syndrome

  • Reflex assessments may be useful for evaluating dementia in adults with Down syndrome (DS) because the assessment is not affected by intellectual or language ability.

Why this matters

  • Individuals with DS are more likely to develop dementia earlier than the typical age of onset for individuals with dementia.

  • Individuals with DS previously had reduced life expectancies; however, due to improved medical care, individuals with DS are living longer, resulting in a higher risk of dementia.

  • Due to the risk of dementia in individuals with DS, a method to detect the early onset of dementia is warranted.
