Reflex assessments may be useful for evaluating dementia in adults with Down syndrome (DS) because the assessment is not affected by intellectual or language ability.
Why this matters
Individuals with DS are more likely to develop dementia earlier than the typical age of onset for individuals with dementia.
Individuals with DS previously had reduced life expectancies; however, due to improved medical care, individuals with DS are living longer, resulting in a higher risk of dementia.
Due to the risk of dementia in individuals with DS, a method to detect the early onset of dementia is warranted.
