Treatment of space-occupying infarction in the elderly with decompressive hemicraniectomy

  • As a live-saving therapeutic option, decompressive hemicraniectomy (DH) should be considered but the low chance of survival without severe, permanent functional damage should be explained to patients and relatives.

Why this matters

  • There are few treatment options for elderly patients with space-occupying middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction and decompressive hemicraniectomy may improve survival without severe disability.
