The incidence and extent of visual field deficits (VDF) after laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is lower compared with data reported on anterior temporal lobectomies in individuals with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE).
Why this matters
MTLE is the most common form of focal epilepsy syndrome and can been treated using LITT, a far less invasive procedure to the traditional antero-mesial temporal lobectomy. To date, little is known about how thermal damage from the LITT procedure may affect VDFs in individuals. The results from this study will help improve surgical strategies to decrease the rates of VFDs.
