White matter hyperintensities in migraine associated with only minimal microstructural changes

Takeaway

  • Whole brain white matter magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) values are comparable between individuals with migraine and those without, and there is no evidence for more diffuse microstructural changes in their white matter compared with the general population.

Why this matters

Although visible, the white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) show only minor changes in microstructure suggesting their clinical irrelevance. The findings will hopefully provide reassurance for both migraine sufferers and their physicians.
